Let Jehovah give you a hug today with these comforting scriptures
There is something so beautiful about reading the Bible as a love letter. Not in a sentimental, watered-down, romantic kind of way, but in the most literal sense: Jehovah put into writing what kind of person he is, what he has said to those he loves, and what he has promised. And when we read those words and let them settle over us personally, something happens. We feel seen and held. We feel, in the truest way, like someone cares for us, like we are deeply known and deeply loved.
Here are six scriptures that have been doing exactly that for me lately.
“I know you by name.” (Exodus 33:12)
Moses recalled Jehovah saying this to him, and it’s worth sitting with for a moment. To know someone by name isn’t just recognizing them in a crowd. It means you truly see them. In a world where so many people move through their days feeling invisible, Jehovah says: I see you. I know you. That kind of attention from the Creator of everything can feel massive and can be hard to take in. But it’s real, its right there in the Bible, and it’s for you.
“Until you grow old I will be the same… as I have done, I will carry you and bear you and rescue you.” (Isaiah 46:4)
Read that slowly. The only limitation in this promise is ours. We will grow old. We will reach the end of our years. But Jehovah will be carrying us, supporting us and rescuing us the entire way, just as he always has. Humans love each other genuinely and still can’t promise that kind of faithfulness over a lifetime. Jehovah can, and he does.
“You show your faithfulness in what you do for the brothers, even though they are strangers to you.” (3 John 5)
Jehovah notices the kindness you show when nobody’s watching. The way you show love to others, whether someone is close to you or practically a stranger. He considers that faithfulness. We often do things thinking nobody notices, but Jehovah always does, and there’s something so tender about that. He’s paying attention to you.
“I have loved you with an everlasting love.” (Jeremiah 31:3)
We use the word everlasting loosely sometimes, especially when we talk about love. But romantic love, as beautiful as it can be, isn’t actually everlasting. It can cool over time and sometimes it gets cut short by death. Jehovah, though, will never die. So when he says his love for you is everlasting, he means it in a way no human being ever could. The love he has for you exceeds anything we’ve experienced in human relationships, and it will outlast everything in this system.
“I will not leave you until I have done what I promised you.” (Genesis 28:15)
Jehovah said this to Jacob, but it tells us something true about his character across the board. He is a God who keeps his word. Everything he has promised you, everything he has promised his people, is as good as done. Whatever you’re waiting on, whatever feels uncertain, Jehovah has not forgotten. He’s not leaving until it’s finished – you can trust him.
“The one trusting in Jehovah is surrounded by his loyal love.” (Psalm 32:10)
There’s something almost unequal about this exchange. Our trust, and in return, Jehovah’s loyal love surrounding us completely. That’s it. And if you’re looking for what a hug from Jehovah actually feels like, this might be the closest description we have. When you’re wrapped in his loyal love, you’re in the safest place you could ever be.
Take a moment today to thank Jehovah for what he’s given us in the Bible. He allowed all of it to be written down so we could know him, feel close to him, and have something real to hold onto. “It is good to give thanks to Jehovah.”
